The bad thing about secrets is they quite often have a way of coming out. The reasons for keeping secrets are usually anything but positive. Typically, someone gets hurt. There is that rare reason of trying to spare a person's feelings, but more times than not, it is a matter of hiding something you've done wrong or something bad has happened.
Trent's secret about the night with Detrell has haunted him for some time. While he had his reasons for not telling Mike — I'll leave it up to you as to whether you think they were good reasons or not — he seemed more motivated by fear.
I'm not a person big on secrets. I try to tell my other half what bothers me. I'm sure all of us try to hide something that we find embarrassing. That's human nature. When you can bare your soul to someone and they can accept you and your shortcomings, that's a sign of true love. I hope all you out there have that — or find that — kind of love that you can open your heart.
When writing this chapter, I had no temptation to write it any other way than how Mike reacted. It is how I envision his character.
Feel free to offer your thoughts.
I knew that Trent should have told Mike about Detrell. That showed poor judgment on his part - just as Mike showed poor judgment letting Lance hold his dick when he was drunk. I feel sorry for Lance, but also very concerned about his drinking. I hope he finds his footing soon.

ReplyDeleteGreat subject, secrets, which do often have awful consequences just from having been kept secret. However, from Tim's buildup I'd expected something more life-changing! Yeah, Trent should've told Mike about Detrell, but I understand why he didn't, and now Mike knows and has handled it great, and Trent is relieved of that awful stress.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased to see Trent handling the situation with his dad better than I was expecting, and keeping peace with his mom. With Berwyn, though, I'm increasingly concerned about Lance's mental health, as reflected in the drinking. I guess it bothers me even more for the most superficial reason: From Lance's first appearance I've loved him for his raw sexuality, as in the famous shower scene. Boy, is a beer gut gonna spoil that! While he may have other problems we don't know about, obviously his inability to accept being gay or bi is taking a terrible toll -- and crushing on Trent sure isn't going to help. Please, Lance, come to your senses!
Wow. That was a twist.
ReplyDeleteWow! Chapter 27 was very moving! I knew that the situation with Detrell would come back to haunt Trent and Mike. Just didn’t know it would be Lance who spilled the beans. Trent did everything right in that situation except for not telling Mike. Trent does need to get over himself and tell his mother that he loves her!!! I understand his frustration with his Daddy, but his mother doesn’t deserve that kind of treatment.
ReplyDeletePoor Lance, he wants lots of sex and cannot admit that he is even bi, let alone gay.
Great job!
