Uber

This story was very different for me. Most of my regular readers know I'm a sucker for a love story — and I absolutely love crafting tales of men finding their right person. Uber wasn't that kind of story.

As I was taking a break after my eighth book, the idea for this story struck me, and I started writing it on a plane. Fleshing out the details and the conversations was fun. In my mind, I'd love to see it play out on film.

When Blake asks Nathaniel if he had a high school experience with a boy, he said, "Kind of." It's fun to wonder if after the Uber ride, if someone asked him if he ever had sex with a man, what would he say? They didn't really. But ... kind of?

I hope after readers finish Uber, it stays with them for a while. Will Blake improve his marriage? What will the first 24 hours upon his return be? What will Nathaniel think about his sexual experience? Will the two men think of each other from time to time? These are the questions I want to resonate with each reader.

Both characters admit their shortcomings during the drive. Somehow through their connection, they come out with a better understanding of themselves, unlikely that such a drive would cause such a result. Your thoughts?

If this is your first introduction to my work, my first eight stories can be found under my author tab. They all intertwine with multiple characters crossing over from book to book, but each story has its own protagonist. All but one can be found in Adult Friends on Nifty, Book Eight is in College.

[1} Extracurricular
[2} If It Weren't For The Two of Us
[3]  Hi, I'm Lance
[4]  Ascension (Jakob's Ladder)
[5]  Coffee at 9
[6]  Laramie
[7]  Say Goodbye to Sparkleland
[8]  A Bed, A Desk and My Unfortunate Soulmate (posted as My Unfortunate Soulmate)

For my regular readers, you know I have more books planned in the Jackson Bend series. However, do you like these short ones as well?

  1. It’s hot. I would just have preferred the two remain friends after the encounter.

  2. It was hot. I think put the two guys should have remained friends or in contact, but aside from that it was perfect.

  5. Just read Uber and really enjoyed the story. Your writing is awesome…glad you shared.

My take is this will provide a conundrum for Nathaniel, which may lead him to a new sexual direction. I’m going with that Blake and Garrett will get in gear and there’s the love story.

    Again…really enjoyed!

  6. That was good! Short and sweet. I liked both men. I felt sorry for Blake and happy that Nathaniel got "closure". Even the short ones are good. Keep it up buddy.

  7. Timothy, it's great to see you stretch that fine writerly imagination in a new way. You've worked hard to make each of the "canonical" books a different kind of writing (and reading) experience. It's great to see you attempt something really different.

One thing remains constant, and I love it: that both characters are such nice, decent, likable, giving, and deserving guys, making this reader at least hope for something good to come of this long ride -- and it does! I like the carefully believable unreeling of the trip, leading to such a lovely payoff in what the guys give each other. It's tantalizing to imagine them as a couple, but the point here is that in this intriguing setting -- at once so impersonal and yet potentially weirdly personal -- they allow themselves to drop their defenses and find inside them a freedom to connect. I like to think they both come away aware that this version of themselves needs to be more available to them in their "real" lives.

As you can see, both Blake and Nathaniel (which btw really is a beautiful name -- kudos to his mother for insisting on its use!) and their shared journey has stuck in my imagination.

  10. Was not taken by the story even though it's very well-written. Problem, maybe not, was on second reading I loved it. First impression do lie. Hope you can revisit these characters.
